Abstract

The city of Medan holds numerous heritage buildings that need to be formally identified as cultural heritage assets so that the city can display its historical character through them. One such building is Warenhuis, together with the former Borsumij office on Jalan Hindu. Warenhuis was Medan's first department store and therefore carries high historical value, reflecting the city's economic progress at the time. Data were gathered through two approaches: a case-study assessment of the heritage data of Warenhuis, the former Borsumij site, and the surrounding site conditions, and a Post Occupancy Evaluation (POE) to examine the building's present-day use. Data collection also involved direct field observation at both locations. For the future design direction, an Evidence-Based Design (EBD) approach is applied. The data collected through both methods were analysed separately using method triangulation and the findings were then combined and discussed together. The results describe the present condition of the historic Warenhuis building and the former Borsumij office as cultural heritage assets and outline a design recommendation for their continued use.
